Question: Why is business the most popular field of study among the visible minorities?


The percentage of visible minority population along with Indigenous people and persons with disabilities in companies reported under the Canada Business Corporations Act has increased in the last year, crossing the 10 per cent threshold, according to the Osler diversity report. Since the number of visible minorities holding board seats in these companies has gone up, it would explain why business, management and public administration is the most popular field of study for them at 15.7% compared to 11.3% for people not belonging to a visible minority. 

In the Corporations Canada annual report from 2022, Corporations Canada also identified that 23 per cent of the corporations in Canada have at least one member of a visible minority as a board of director, 12 per cent hold senior management positions, and 6 per cent hold board seats.

    Hi Nyamat, good job on managing such a huge dataset. I really like your chart. It's well-organized. However, regarding the finding, I don't see how the increase of visible minorities in corporations lead to the increase of visible minorities majoring in business. It could be due to the other way around; there are more people from a minority group because there are more of them majoring in business.

    Hey Nyamat, great data update and as others commented before, your chart looks really nice and being able to differentiate the graph was also a nice touch. Your data report was also very interesting and it would be cool to see a graph showing how many large companies have visible minorities in higher positions for your final data report.

    Hi, I like how simple you were able to make your chart, separated into each field of work with a simple two factor bar chart was a great choice. I like the opposite colours too.

    Great update! The type of chart and colours you chose allows the reader to compare and read the chart with ease. I'd recommend putting "Business, management and public administration" the first data point as it's what the chart is about, and it's the largest data point for visible minorities. Overall, great work!

    Your chart incorporates a lot of data, but you can make it clear very well. And you use different colors for contrast so that the reader can clearly understand the difference. A very interesting topic in general.

  The above image is a data visualization from The Guardian in an article about Australia's progress on the climate crisis.    Strengths of the above data visualization:  The data displays a large amount of information covering a period of 23 years.  It is easy to compare the Co2 emissions in 2010 because the bubbles are accompanied with values.  Since there are multiple values in the dataset, the bubbles made it easier to take in all the information at once.  I also like the chart because it explains the complexity of carbon emissions from different countries in a simple way.    Weaknesses of the data visualization:   It’s impossible to tell whether emissions increased or decreased in the first two circles (2001 and 2002). While the first circle is 1.76 per cent, the other is 2.22 per cent.  If the same data was in a bar chart it would have been easier to see a marked increase or decrease instead of comparing the area of two circle...
